Scholars from all disciplines often use altmetrics in the following ways:

  • To quickly learn what others think of their research;
  • To demonstrate the success of their past outreach efforts when applying for grants; and
  • To document the influence of their research when going up for tenure and promotion

Here are some specific examples of how researchers have used altmetrics in the past few years.

Grant Reporting: Dr. Holly Bik

Tenure: Dr. Ahmed Moustafa

Tracking engagement with research: Dr. Terrie Moffitt

Grant Applications: Dr. Fernando T. Maestre

Tracking Open Access research: Dr. Ashley Casey

Tenure: Dr. Steven Roberts
